This boy is the sweetest. We decided to try something new with this session. We came to Jesse’s house instead of bringing him to the studio. We kept it really simple, bringing only a small black backdrop, which we draped over the back of a chair, a furry rug, and a basket. This way we could use window light and focus on close-ups of Jesse’s adorable baby features that will only be this way for such a short time.
This was AWESOME. I may never go back to having parents bring their kids to the studio when they are young. First of all, it was his environment. Home field advantage is the best for a young one. They aren’t in a new scary place, and they are much more willing to be relaxed and playful. I spent the first few minutes playing with him without the camera and letting him show me his toys and his new trick, clapping, which he is INCREDIBLY proud of. It’s so cute.
Secondly, I got to raid Jesse’s closet before we started the pictures. His Mom had some favorites that we brought out, and I was able to throw in some fun clothing combinations and to give my input so that the focus stayed on the baby and not on his clothes. I love playing dress up.
Finally, there’s not that “sit there and smile” pressure that you get when “we’re going to the photographer.” I got to see his real expressions, and Mom didn’t have to jump up and down to get them. No bribery necessary! I think that this will work on Jesse for many years to come.
So think about this for your child’s next session. You’ll get so many more choices because a happy baby = more time to get those awesome shots we crave. And we won’t even judge your messy house (haha, if you had even SEEN ours, you would know why…).

The many faces of Jesse. I can guarantee that I would never have seen most of these if we weren't at his house. SOOO so cute. The bottom right is our absolute favorite.

The pouty lips. Jenna says that when she wants his Grandma to babysit, she just brings Jesse to her wearing this hat. Works every time.

I am so happy that we got this one. He has just those two bottom teeth right now, and we really wanted to show his tooth progress in the pictures.

Gaining his trust with the clapping ahead of time really paid off. Now he is doing it every chance he gets, even with the camera around! Yay.

Got this one during a wardrobe change.

Babies don't need cute outfits to look great in pictures. Take advantage of these shots while you can! After 1-2 years of age, it'll just be creepy. But for now, adorably CUUUTE, and captured forever to show his future dates.

Jesse has the longest eyelashes ever.

Destined to be a Rangers fan.

I've posted a few extra favorites on my facebook page. Friend me if you dare. I have also recently posted an informative tutorial (photo album) that chronicles my baby photography efforts/practice using my cat. Don't judge.
